The best part of a Jeep is the places you can take it. Off roading is just one of the many perks a Jeep gives you. The problem I have found, for many Jeep owners, when they travel, or even in their own town, they aren’t sure the places they can take their Jeep offroading. The best thing to do is talk to other Jeep owners. Since both of my sons have a Jeep, we keep a list of places to go whenever we travel. So where can you go off roading in Maryland for the holidays? Always keep in mind, check to make sure that the rules have not changed, and also make sure if you need to have a permit, get it. This is how we keep these areas open for off roading. When people fail to follow these rules, the areas get closed or off limits.
Assateague Island beach is open year round and is perfect for off roading, on the tame side. The area is 12 miles long, but does have a vehicle limit of 145. On the weekends, the vehicle limits is reached early and does a one on/one off system. There is another stretch on the Virginia end, which has many of the same rules. There is a large stretch that closes due to nesting birds.
Backbone Mountain / Burkholder Road ORV Trail in the Potomac-Garrett State Forest: The off roading portion of the trail begins at the intersection of Swanton Hill Road and Maryland Route 135. It runs northwest in 2 off shoots to the Juvenile Justice Boy’s Camp and to the boundary line of the forest.
George Washington and Jefferson National Forests: Whle technically in Virginia, the forest areas have 19 miles of trails and different recreational activities. With a special permit, there are certain areas for off roading. Go down the South Pedlar trail, Peters Mill Run and Taskers Gap.
