Road trips are one of the easiest and inexpensive ways to take a vacation. If you are taking a road trip with a baby, it can cause a little dread. Taking a road trip with a baby doesn’t have to be stressful, and it can even be fun. It just takes a little bit of planning.
Does your baby like being in the car? Does she usually sleep well in the car? If she does, try to plan the trip around the time she would normally be sleeping. That way, she can spend at least part of the time asleep. If she does not like to sleep in the car, plan the trip for when she just wakes up. Do not expect your baby to behave differently than normal just because you have planned a special trip.
Think about if you should and can split the trip into sections. If the trip is long, can you take a break half way through? Can you take extra breaks to let baby out of her seat? Giving your baby time to play and move around can keep her happy for longer?
Do you have to arrive at a certain time? If you do have to be someone by a certain time, be sure to leave in extra time for unexpected stops. Baby might need a diaper change or an additional feeding. It the baby might just get extremely unhappy and need a play break.
Make sure you have everything you need. Think about having a shade so that the sun is not bother the baby. Do you have enough food and bottles set up for the trip? Do you have bottle warmers or something to warm up the food for the baby? Do you have extra toys, preferable new or forgotten toys, to help keep entertained? Bring some music that baby enjoys.
