During the holidays, people travel a lot. Whether they are traveling to friends and family in another state, or just driving from house to house to house to visit everyone on their Christmas list, it is a lot of driving. And it is easy to get worn out. People are less responsive and less alert when they are fatigued or tired. Try these simple tips in order to stay alert from Reedman Toll Chevy.

Think Ahead: Give yourself extra time. Don’t feel like you have to drive faster or that you are in a rush. It puts more a strain on driving and causes you to make poor choices. Make sure to leave early and account for traffic and weather.
Stay hydrated and eat well: People tend to eat differently when they travel. Bring along healthy snacks that are easy to eat. Make sure to drink enough water, and not just drink coffee. Eating often and drinking water helps to keep the body functioning at its best.
Stop often: Make sure you stop often to stretch your legs. If you are feeling sleepy from driving, getting out of the car to walk around, stretch and get some fresh air will often help you feel more awake and alert.
Stay the night: If you are really tired, or it is starting to get late, spend the night. Stay with the friends and family you are visiting, get a hotel room where you are, or stop along the route to get a place to stay. If none of these are an option and you feel yourself falling asleep along the drive, stop at a rest stop and try to take a small nap.
Don’t indulge: Drinking and driving is never an option, but don’t have a few cocktails earlier either. Even if you are no longer drinking, drinking earlier in the night could make you more tired. Also, don’t over eat. Over eating can make you feel sleepy too. Try to make sure you are doing things that will make it safe for you to drive.
