Road trips are a great way to get out and have some adventure even when you are short on time and short on cash. You can pack snacks and even meals so that all you have to worry about, expense wise, is the gas. There are even ways to save gas on a road trip, making it easier and more affordable to get out on the road more often.
One of the biggest gas guzzling issue when you are on a road trip is the way people accelerate. When you are stopped at a red light, and the light turns green, start more slowly. Do not floor it. If you ease back up to your speed, you will save more gas.
On the other end, brake smarter. It takes more gas to get a car to start going forward. Once a car is moving, it does not take very much gas to maintain the speed. Do not slam on your brakes if you can avoid it. The more smoothly you drive, the less stop and start, the less gas you use.
Use the cruise control. Once you have hit the speed limit and you have an open road, with little stops, switch to cruise control. It saves gas because it keeps the car at a constant speed.
When you are driving at higher speeds, use the over drive button. The over drive lets the car operate on fewer RPMs, which means that the engine is not working as hard. It is easier on your engine and as a bonus, it saves you money.
