One of the basic parts of car ownership is learning to change your wiper blades. This is a great maintenance tip you will be happy you know how to do and it’s great for preparing for a long road trip, too. You don’t want to be on the road away from home and then have your wiper blades wear out on you.
It can scratch your windshield, doing more expensive damage, and it can make it dangerous to drive in the rain. Wipers are made of mostly rubber, so it makes sense that they would get worn down over time. They’re fairly inexpensive to purchase and easy to change yourself at home once you learn how.
Here’s how to install wiper blades:
- Read your user’s manual to find out the best types of blades for your car.
- Go out and purchase some new blades based on the recommendation of your user’s manual.
- When you’re ready to install, raise the wiper arm. You need to raise the metal arms, so they don’t hit the windshield why you’re working.
- Now remove the old blades. This is going to give you tips on how to reinstall the new ones so take note of how they come off.
- Now to put the new ones on, just reverse the entire process.
- Once in place, secure the blade either by closing the tab or snapping the hook in place (depending on which type you have).
- You could also put a towel in place below to protect the windshield just in case your blade snaps back into place, or slips out of your hands, so you don’t damage your windshield with the metal blade.
That’s really it. Once you’ve done it once, you’ll see how easy it is and you can do it again and again for the life of your vehicle, whenever your blades get worn.
