The holiday season is often a time of celebrating with family you might not get to see all that often. This is why many people travel for the holidays. If you’ve ever had to do it though, you know that traveling with children is not as easy as traveling alone.
- Plan ahead – There’s nothing more important than planning in advance for your trip. Know how you’re getting there, where you’re going, and how much downtime your kids are going to have. You’ll want to plan for stops as well as eating to keep them comfortable. Children will usually need more snacks and more potty breaks than adults. Plan all of this into your schedule so you don’t feel rushed or stressed.
- Keep ages in mind – It’s also very important that you consider the children’s ages when traveling. Younger kids will need comforts, supplies (like diapers, etc.) and favorite toys. Older kids might need more entertainment like handheld electronics, books or magazines they enjoy and a way to listen to music they like.
- Pack properly – This step goes along with the first two. You want to pack properly whether it’s for air travel or car travel, so as to keep items you need quickly easily on hand. For example, important items need to go in your carry-on for air travel, or inside the vehicle for car travel. Other items you won’t need until you arrive can go in the trunk of the car, or with your checked baggage. This will save you a lot of headache while traveling with kids.
- Brings snacks and distractions: Kids need distractions. No matter how old they are. Kids can easily be distracted with a snack. Think of snacks that travel well and do not a mess. pack special toys or electronics. It helps if it is things that kids don’t usually have. Buy special dollar store toys for younger kids. For older kids, add new apps or a movie to their electronics.
With these tips in mind, you can plan ahead and keep the kids happy even while you’re traveling for the holidays.
