There are only a few things that brake down on a car often. Cars need their fluids changed often, wind shield wipers break down and brakes need to be changed every year depending on how much you drive. Thankfully, the brakes will give you signs that they need to be changed. There are a few tell-tale signs that you need to have your brakes changed.
Making Noise: If you hear a clicking noise, or screeching as the problem gets worse, is a sign that the brakes need to be replaced. Car manufactures install a device that stops the brake pads from rattling when the brakes are pressed. The screeching sound is caused by what is called a squealer. It might be heard even when the windows are up.
If the screeching sound is there every time you use the brakes and then it stops, this is a sign brakes need to be replace immediately.
Pulsating: If there is a vibration or pulsating feeling when the brakes are pressed on, it is a sign that the brake pads need to be replaced. The vibration is caused by worn out pads or from pads that have been warped by the heat.
Pulling: There can be several reasons that a car pulls to one side, one of them is that the car needs new brakes. If the car pulls to one side, when the brakes are being used, check the brake pads. If the car pulls when driving a steady pace, it is most likely not the brakes.
Thin Brake Pads: If someone knows how to change a tire, they can check the brake pads. The brake pads should be 1/8 of an inch thick. If the pads are less than that, the pads should be replaced.
Once you know that the brakes need to be replaced, the job can either be done by yourself, if you know how, or visit the dealership.
