One of my biggest goals this year is to save more money. I want to get myself out of all debt, buy property to build a tiny house on, and I want to plan some big trips, like one to Ireland. In order to do that I have to do 2 things: Make more money and save more money. It seems like an easy concept but that doesn’t mean that it is. Most of the time I think I have a pretty tight budget and that I have cut out a lot of things that can easily break a budget. One of the things that I am trying to do this year is to save money on electric.
Saving money on electric doesn’t have to be hard. There are simple things that anyone can do in order to trim down the yearly cost of electric. Some of these tips may seem like simple things and that they wouldn’t really add up to much saving in electricity. The great things about these tips is that they take almost no effort and if they become second nature, the savings will add up on their on.
Turn off the lights. This simple habit, which should be second nature anyway, can actually save you a fortune. When you leave a room, just turn the lights off.
Only use lights when needed. A lot of time during the day, lights are not needed. Simply opening a curtain can will be enough light for most tasks.
Hand wash dishes. You can save more money by washing all of the dishes by hand, but if that isn’t something that interests you, hand wash when there are only a few.
Stop letting the dishwasher dry dishes. Simply turn off the dishwasher when it gets to the drying phase and let the dishes dry naturally.
Keep heating/cooling vents clear. When there are things in front of the area where the heating and cooling air comes out of, it takes more electric to push the air through. Keep the area clear and the air can pass easily, creating better circulation, and using less electric.
Turn Off the Computer. By simply turning the computer off instead of letting it run idle can save quite a bit each year. Letting the computer run idle is just like throwing money away.
Unplug things that aren’t being used. It doesn’t seem like it would use much electricity, but even something like a phone charger being left, unused, sucks up electricity. Since it is not being used by anything, it is just like throwing change out the window. Unplug as many things as possible when they are not being used, from the cell phone charger, to toaster, to tv, to lamps.
Keep the fridge and freezer full. When the fridge and freezer are full, it takes less energy to keep them cold. The empty space does not hold the cold like items in the fridge/freezer.
Change electric companies. Sometimes there are electric companies that charge a lesser rate than the one that is the primary company. Look into companies in the area to see if there is one that is cheaper. Direct Energy PA is a choice in the Pennsylvania area. The Direct Energy plans save up to 16%* over MetEd’s electricity rate, and up to 12%* over Penn Power’s electricity rate and save up to 10%* over Penelec’s electricity rate! (*All savings refers to the current difference between Direct Energy’s fixed rate offer and the Utility’s current Fixed Rate for Basic Service as of January 8, 2016, and does not include any other component of the electricity bill. Utility rates are subject to change and there may be no savings following the respective official utility rate change date. Direct Energy’s fixed rates include electricity supply charges only and excludes delivery/transmission charges, taxes, and all other utility-related charges. Offer is limited and valid for new residential customers only.) Direct energy offers a fixed-rate energy plan so the electricity rate won’t fluctuate throughout your contract term. Direct Energy is the only energy provider to be a part of Plenti. You can earn rewards every month with Plenti, which helps in saving money in other places. Direct Energy offers different savings depending on where you live. It is as simple as plugging in the zipcode on the landing page to learn about the offers available in that area!
