Summer is a great time for travel and fun. Many families plan their family vacations during the summer and you might travel to visit family as well. If you’re planning on taking your vehicle for a summer trip, there are some things you should do first to get your car prepped and ready to go.
Let’s take a look at how to prepare your vehicle for a summer trip:
- Get the oil checked – Not only do you need to check fluid levels, but you also want to be sure you have the right type of oil and that it’s not old. In older cars, you would switch to a heavier oil in the summer, but modern engines don’t really require this. If your car is newer than 15 years old, you’re good.
- Know the fluid levels – Oil isn’t the only fluid, so get familiar with the other fluids in your car and get everything checked out. Summer temps can cause fluids to evaporate. Your engine can run hotter in the summer, too, making you burn off more fluids.
- Check your tires – This is one of the most important parts of your car, especially before a road trip. You need to be sure the tread is not too worn and that your tires have the right air pressure. You also want to check for any bumps or bubbles that could mean your tire is damaged and might burst or blow out soon.
- Check your spare – It’s also important to check your spare tire (unless you have a newer model vehicle that doesn’t have one). Make sure your spare is in good condition and suitable to change out should you get a flat on your trip.
