Great Gardens for Busy People

I love to garden. It’s a great stress reliever. I also love to travel. Therein lies the rub.

Gardens are so much fun, but they can be very labor intensive as well. I think I’ve found the answer. I put together some great garden ideas for those of us who are all go all the time.

Great Gardens for Busy People

Gardens Don’t Have to be Squares

It seems like when people think gardens, they think beds. Raised beds, flower beds, vegetable garden plots. While those are some of the more common garden layouts, gardens don’t have to be beds. In fact only one of the gardens you’ll read about here will have a bed at all, and none of them require weeding, hoeing, or other labor intensive care.

Indoor Herb Garden

Indoor herb gardens are a great idea for people who are constantly on the go. They grow well next to a window, and because they’re indoors, you don’t have to worry about weeding. To save some time in your hectic schedule, buy your herbs in pots instead of growing them from seed. If you have a nice, big pot, you can plant all your herbs together – they don’t mind being planted close. Another fun way to make your garden is to have a large-ish center pot and a few smaller pots around it for some interest. If you go on a trip, all you need to do is put a water bottle with a small hole in the lid, lid-side down into the soil. It will water the plants while you’re gone.

The House Plant Garden

I love what I like to call “house plant gardens”. It’s basically getting several houseplants with a variety of sizes, colors, and textures and grouping them together. It’s very similar to the indoor herb garden. Line them all up against a wall for a linear look, or if you have the room, group them together in a bunch. Just let your imagination go wild. The house plant and indoor herb gardens are all about making full use of planters and your imagination. If you have to travel, you can water your houseplants in the same way you would the herb garden.

Succulents

A succulent garden is one of the easiest gardens you’ll ever have. Succulents are cacti and plants like Aloe Vera. All succulents like to be dry and require very little water or care, so they’re one of the best gardens for people who are either very busy or who travel all the time. One of the best things about succulents is that if you get compact varieties you can plant them very close together. You can have a complete garden in one large pot!

Zen Gardens

While Zen gardens probably aren’t in the forefront of your mind when you think gardens, it’s an idea that is actually amazing in its simplicity. Zen gardens are beautiful, and you can’t kill them. There aren’t any plants! They’re just rocks and While that may not sound like something that promotes beauty and stress relief, it’s actually the opposite. Zen gardens are beautiful and there’s a very soothing component to using that tiny little rake to smooth out the sand and make those lines in it. The best part is that it’s completely fool proof. You can’t kill anything, and you can always change the layout at any time!

I hope you enjoyed these garden ideas. Any one of these is a great choice for on-the-go people. I’d love to know if you have any easy to care for gardens or which one of these gardens was your favorite.
